Daily Tonic || Types of Songs


Text- 2 Kings 3:15 “But now bring me a musician.” And when the musician played, the hand of the LORD came upon him”

Yesterday, I shared briefly on the proper perspective from which to view music, and the kinds of Spirits that songs can originate from. Today, we will go on to talk about the different types of songs.

There are basically 5 types of songs:

1. Divine Songs

These are divine inspirations, prophetic directions, Gospel truths, Bible doctrines, divine instructions, scriptural rebuke, covenants and promises etc. conveyed with melody

For a Christian: VERY GOOD AND EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

2. Worship Songs

They show reverence for God, and express our love for him For a Christian: GOOD AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

3. Natural Songs

Natural songs use melody to convey human wisdom & inspiration, personal experiences & principles, appreciation of nature, culture, traditions, love, encouragements, oratory, poetry etc. conveyed with melody For a Christian: NEEDS A LOT OF SCRIPTURAL UNDERSTANDING AND GODLY WISDOM TO NAVIGATE

4. Sinful Songs

Lyrics and/or dance steps are sinful, profane and/or suggestive in nature. For a Christian: BAD AND STRONGLY DISCOURAGED.

5. Demonic Songs: Blasphemy, lyrics, beats and/or dance steps have a demonic undertone, and directly or indirectly have a link with idolatry and/or occultism For a Christian: EXTREMELY BAD AND FORBIDDEN.

From the explanation above, it is clear the type of songs we can embrace and the type of songs that we must stay away from. However, you may have observed that natural songs are at the borderline. This is because they come from the human spirit, which is subject to influences from the other Spirits.

In the case of natural songs, we must carefully examine its lyrics to be sure of whether to listen to them or not. Philippians 4:8 is a good guide on this:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Are the lyrics of that natural song true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy? If yes, then it may be safe to listen to.

PRAYERS:

1. Lord, please grant me the wisdom to know which songs are safe for me, and which ones I should stay away from.

2. Lord, I ask that you quicken my heart and grant me the grace not to be swayed away by bad songs that have nice melody.

3. Lord, teach me to love what you love and to detest what you detest, especially when it comes to music.
