Text- Romans 12:4-5 “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
Paul the apostle many times used the human body to illustrate the relationship between Jesus Christ and the Church. He pointed out that Christ is the head of the body.
“And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence” – Colossians 1:18
Now, we know that our head is the part that directs the rest of our body into meaningful activity. In the same vein, Christ, the head, seeks to direct His body (The Church) into meaningful activities of His will.
The Church, which is the body of Christ, is made up of everyone who believes in His name and has accepted him as Lord. This means that every true believer in the world (including you) is part of His body.
Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:14 & 27 “Now the body is not made up of one part but of many… Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it”. So we say, the body of Christ consists of many members and as such, the body of Christ is diversified. People from every race, color, land, and nation are all part of the same body.
You see, a head without a body is as useless as a body without a head. The head is important, but so is every member of the body. A body which does not have all of its members is limited in what it can do. For instance, a man with no legs cannot run a race. A man without eyes cannot see the stars. A man without arms cannot climb a tree.
Therefore, it goes on to say that every member in Christ’s body is very vital and important to Him. Every member in Christ’s body has a particular function. When you examine the different parts of your body, you find that your toes and ears do not serve the same purpose; neither do your eyes and feet. Likewise in the body of Christ all members do not have the same use. Instead, every member has his own function.
Narrowing this down to the local Church setting, it means you have a specific function in your local Church; you have a special work or duty; you have a part to play!
Don’t be a bench warmer in Church. You should be playing an active role and contributing your quota to the growth of the body of Christ through your local Church.
PRAYER
Lord, help me to recognize my specific function as a member of the body of Christ, grant me the faith and strength to fulfil that function in Jesus Name.
