Daily Tonic || Don’t Worry

Text- Matthew 6:25 – “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes?”

With everything going on in the world today, it’s pretty hard not to worry. I think Global Warming is enough reason to worry. I mean, to think that a terribly hot weather caused a 10km stretch of the Hume Highway, near Melbourne in Australia to literally melt. The weather was so hot that even cars were melting!

Politic, economy, security… the list goes on and on. Added to these are the thoughts of your own personal cares and burdens – what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear – can there ever be any valid reason not to worry?

Jesus answered this question, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”

Jesus is basically telling us here not to ever get worked up over every little detail of our lives, because God will work things out for us. The God who gave us life is gracious and powerful enough to sustain it. We are not left to handle life on our own.

Jesus also showed us the futility of worrying. When you worry, it literally drains your strength and waste your time, but doesn’t change anything. In short, worry produces no profitable result. In fact, if we go about worrying about tomorrow's potential problems, we will inadvertently waste today.

Jesus asked, “Which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” No one can! In fact, doctors will tell you that worrying can shorten your life.

So do not worry, saying, ’What shall we eat?’ or ’What shall we drink?’ or ’What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. (Matthew 6:31-32)

God is your heavenly Father, and He knows every of your need. He is your provider, and He cares about you. That is enough reason not to worry.

But Jesus did not just tell us “Hey! Don’t you worry”, He went on to tell us the solution to worry. He says “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

You see, there is nobody on earth who does not have one thing or another to worry about. But the Lord has called all of us to respond the same way to whatever it is that we might worry about… Put God first.

PRAYER

Lord, I’m grateful that you are my heavenly Father, and that you take such good care of me. I put you first in my life today and I ask that you help me to give all my worries over to you.
