Daily Tonic || Understanding Music (4)

Text- 2 Kings 3:15 “But now bring me a musician.” And when the musician played, the hand of the LORD came upon him”

We read in the 1st Samuel 16 that when an evil spirit tormented King Saul, they got David to play music. As David played, Bible says, the evil spirit would depart from him.

Paul said in Colossians 3:16, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

Why would Paul stress the importance of music in our Christian lives? What is so special about "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs" that can transform our lives? Evidently, songs are so powerful!

If songs and music in general are this powerful, we cannot afford to be careless about what we listen to.

I already explained some few tests with which we can examine and determine what kind of song to listen to: Lyrics test, repository test, music style test, and dance test. Today, I will conclude this series with a few more tests that with which to examine songs.

4. Bestirring Test

This had to do with examining how the music affects your desires. How do you feel after listening to the song? What inspirations come to your mind? How does the song affect your spirit?

This test has nothing to do with the lyrics, style, or dance. It’s about the overall effect of the song on you as a person. Some find that certain songs stir them up sexually or predispose them to commit crimes. Such songs are to be avoided.

5. Test of Conviction

Sometimes, all you have to do is just listen to your inner man. Your personal convictions and consecrations may disallow you from listening to certain songs that may otherwise be Okay for another believer. Learn to evaluate the convictions deep within your spirit about every song you listen to.

6. Test for the Infirm

If the song has passed all the tests above, you must finally, put it through the test for the infirm, as recommended in 1 Corinthians 8:9. “But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to them that are weak.”

As Paul explains in1 Corinthians 9:19-23, do this for the sake of the gospel

PRAYER

Lord, please grant me the wisdom to know which songs are safe for me, and which ones I should stay away from in Jesus Name.
