Have you ever wondered what it takes to live a life of uncommon courage?
Have you ever tried to figure out why certain people hold the stake even in the face of enticement, criticism and rejection? The simple answer is conviction.
Every day, we are faced with choices; and as Christians, we must have some godly convictions that determine not only the choices we make, but also the lifestyle we lead. Such convictions should in fact define who we are.
The subject of conviction is very pivotal; it plays an important role in our Christian walk and has a powerful influence on our entire being. This is why it is important for us to examine our convictions and straighten them out.
Unless you are utterly convinced of the truth of God’s Word, you cannot fight the good fight of faith and stay the course till the end. Without the right convictions, there is no way you will be able to withstand the storms and enticements that life will throw at you.
Already we have seen in the past few days that the right place to draw our convictions from is the word of God. I have also showed you how some people’s conviction come from law, science, civility, and support groups. Today, we will examine another wrong place where people tend to draw their convictions from
5. CURRENT TRENDS
Current tends refer to what is popular or in vogue at a given point in time. It usually more applied to popular styles in fashion or entertainment, but could be used to refer to many other things. The Bible warns us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). We are also likewise admonished in 2 Cor. 6:17, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord…” This shows how flawed any conviction that is drawn from current trend is.
Take for example, someone may decide not to wear a certain style of clothing which is revealing, because it's no longer in vogue; when you see the person all covered up, don’t think she loves dressing decently because the day a revealing cloth is what’s in vogue, she will wear it.
One current trend in the world today, especially in a place like Nigeria, is that everybody goes to Church on Sunday. Some see it as the best place to showcase their style and fashion. So when you see such people going to Church every Sunday, don’t be deceived to think they love the Lord… They are just following the current trend.
Beloved, what is the source of your conviction? Are you conformed to the world or transformed by the Word?
PRAYER
Lord, if there is any area of my life where my convictions are wrong, help me to realign today so that in the face of trials and temptations, my resolve to serve and to please you will not fail.
