Check Yourself

What do you do when you catch yourself thinking of something that is immoral or sinful, what do you do when you find yourself desiring something ‘forbidden’? Do you immediately snap out of it and speak words to send the thought or desire away or you dwell on it for just a little longer, to at least enjoy the pleasure of your dirty imaginations? Do you immediately get to work because you know what the Bible says about an idle mind being the devils workshop or you lay down for a bit and allow the euphoria of those thoughts wash over you?

We all shout and declare how much we love God, we all are always eager to tell God how we want more of Him and want Him to fill up our lives, how we want Him to take priority and be our hearts only desire but honestly, what we do in these little moments is what tells God whether or not we are putting our heart where our mouth is.

It’s easy to be a Christian on the outside, to be a good brother or sister, to be your pastors favourite but all of that stuff is just showmanship if your heart is not in the right place. What is the state of your heart? What happens when it comes down to you and your thoughts? Are you as loud about Jesus in the things that you think or the things that you give permission to stay in your head as you are about Him out in the open? It’s like the common saying in pidgin; ‘’I love you no be for mouth o’’ I love you is not just something you say with your mouth, it’s something you say with your heart.

Even the Scripture makes us understand that salvation is a two-stepped process, Romans 10:9, first, you confess with your mouth. If a mere confession was enough, the Bible would have stopped there but no, It didn’t, it went further to say ‘’and in your heart you have faith…’’ and well, you know what they say about leaving the best for the last, so I strongly believe that the Bible mentioned the place of the heart last because it plays the most important role.

In the same way that we can only be saved by speaking and believing, we need to love God in our speaking and thinking. That you’re living a holy life is not enough, you also have to be pure in heart.

I was listening to a sermon or maybe it was a book, anyways, it was talking on the difference between purity and holiness and it said; holiness has to do with the outward look, the things you do and the way you act but purity my brethren, is on a much deeper level, purity talks about the state of your heart; your thoughts.

I think that the state of our heart is so important because everything else that we do; the things we say, do, the way that we act is a reflection of that state, so only when your heart is pure will you be able to properly live a holy life, in other words; we cannot completely serve God in full capacity if our heart is not correctly positioned before Him. It’s like a quote I saw earlier today by Rev. Austin Ukporhe; Your walk and work with God can only be accurate when your heart is aligned.

Your heart is the heart of your Christianity.
